ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Reading and Writing at curriculum level 5B or higher

ASSESSMENT: Level 1 Achievement Standards

TOTAL CREDITS: 18-24 per module

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

English courses are offered as themed modules at NCEA Level One. Each module runs for a full year based on a theme decided by students in the previous year. Students will study written, visual and oral texts based on their theme. More information about module selection will be given through Year 10 English classes.

Total credits: Individual courses will be decided out of a possible 4-8 External, 12 - 24 Internal

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Similar to Level One, this course is taught through a thematic lens. Students will opt into the course that best suits their interests, chosen from teacher recommendations. Possible themes include Maori and Pacific Voices, Social Justice and Dystopia. Students will learn written, visual and oral language skills through the lens - and the courses will be designed around student needs. In order to gain University Entrance students will be given the opportunity to opt into a writing and reading portfolio, this will be largely managed in their own time.

Assessment: Level 2 Achievement Standards

Total credits: 18 - 24 Internal

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course uses the Naenae community and surrounding area as a springboard to explore ourselves, our local environment and global issues. Using the knowledge they already bring with them - students will spend time in the community and build on their ability to make meaning and connections with their world. Standards for this course are cross-curricular and based on student interest. The course is a mix of Unit Standards and Achievement Standards and is not designed to offer University Entrance.

Total credits: 4 - 8 External, 15 Internal

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course offers internally and externally assessed Level 3 English Achievement Standards in written,

visual and oral language. Students will critically engage in a range of challenging texts and make

connections between texts and the wider world.

Entry requirements: Recommendation of staff

Assessment: Level 1-3 internally assessed EL Unit Standards

Total Credits: Variable depending on the individual. A student who attends regularly and puts effort into the learning can expect to achieve at least 16-20 credits.


COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is aimed at students in years 11, 12 and 13 who are at the beginning of their English Language learning. The aim is to extend language knowledge in reading, writing, speaking and listening and prepare students for mainstream English courses in the following year or the one after. It offers an individualized, differentiated programme catering to specific needs. The teacher will choose from among the following EL Standards and may also add one or two mainstream English Achievement Standards such as the speech (AS90857).
